Meeting UNESCO

Here, the vineyards of the Montagne de Reims region stretch between the forest massif of the Parc Naturel Régional de la Montagne de Reims and the agricultural plain.

The region’s microclimates make it possible to grow the three grape varieties authorized in Champagne, and to offer a wide range of wines with varied characteristics thanks to the blending and ageing skills of the producers.

Some thirty wineries and houses bearing the “Vignobles & Découvertes ” label open their doors to you, revealing the secrets of their champagnes for a tasting and/or a tour of their wineries.

The Champagne Tourist Route starts in Reims, where you’ll be sure to admire its remarkable architectural and cultural heritage, and enjoy the bustle of its city center!

On the heights of Reims, a visit to one of the champagne cellars on the Saint-Nicaise hill, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a must. Millions of bottles are housed in ancient chalk quarries…

You’ll then set off to explore the other, more intimate Champagne region, stopping first at Gueux and then seeing the first vines appear at Vrigny… Your route then takes you to Epernay.

A lighthouse in a sea of vines

Windmills are all very well, but what kind of fantasy is it to find a lighthouse in the middle of the Verzenay vineyards? In 1909, the Champagne house J. Goulet had this “advertising gadget” built, with a light brush that reached as far as Reims. At the time, the lighthouse was also home to a “guinguette” (dance hall)…

Now transformed into a vineyard museum, the Lighthouse of Verzenay invites you to explore the fascinating world of the Champagne vineyards on a one-and-a-half-hour museum tour. You can also enjoy an exceptional panorama of the prestigious hillsides of the Montagne de Reims either from the Panoramic Garden or during an unusual 25-metre climb…

At the end of your visit, as befits a visit to the Champagne region, you can discover a selection of champagnes from the winemakers in the tasting room.

Answer

This operation consists of opening the bottle to expel the deposit of dead yeast.

This is done by freezing the neck: the bottles are on their point (upside down) at the end of the riddling process. The neck is immersed in a solution at -25°C, which freezes the deposit. The bottle is then turned upside down and the cap removed. Under the effect of pressure (6 bars inside the bottle), the ice cube is expelled.
