If there’s one place where you wouldn't expect to find Dom Pérignon, it's Argonne!
And yet the most famous Benedictine monks was born in Sainte-Ménehould.
Hardly surprising then that the town wanted to pay tribute to him with a statue in his likeness, which has pride of place in the middle of the Pasteur square since 1958.
The sculptor, Nicolas Alba, carried out a lot of research on Dom Pérignon’s life and wanted to capture the monk’s intense pondering, more scientific than mystic, in this work that measures 1.75 m tall.
Many people think that Pierre Pérignon came from Hautvillers since he is laid to rest there and lived all of the end of his life there, but he was born and baptised in Sainte-Ménehould in 1639.

The little extra
In 1658, he entered the monks’ school at Saint Vannes in Verdun where he made his profession of faith and became Dom Pérignon.
It was at Hautvillers, near Épernay, where he was the abbey’s cellar master monk, where he perfected the famous method for the “champagnisation” of wine.
