When vineyard lodges reinvent the face of the vineyard

These often modest, one-room structures first appeared in the 16th century and were most often used by winegrowers for shelter, food and rest…

Witness to the ancient practices of Champagne winegrowing, vineyard lodges are intimately linked to the identity of the region and its history, and contribute to the identity of the Champagne winegrowing landscape.

A tour of these new-generation lodges, built mainly from recycled materials, is now available.

As well as offering shelter and a meeting point during the harvest, these lodges are now a popular place for walkers to take a break.

Nestled into the hillsides, equipped with swings, transformed into huge picnic tables or open-air beds… They all offer a breathtaking view of the vineyards and invite you to discover!

Having fallen into disuse, this memory of the winegrowing landscape, is finding a new lease of life in Champagne thanks to the first edition of the “Architecture and Champagne” summer universities in 2017.

Fifty-seven students from all over the world have already risen to the challenge: to build these eco-responsible micro-architectures in just 12 days.

And today, no fewer than 22 lodges, located in the different terroirs of Champagne, welcome you to the vineyards.
