Hautvillers, Cradle of Champagne

A traditional, picturesque village in the Montagne de Reims Natural Park, right in the heart of the vineyards, Hautvillers owes its reputation primarily to Dom Pérignon, the father of fundamental discoveries such as the blending of grapes from different terroirs.

Hautvillers is an essential stopover on your Champagne tour, offering a wide range of Champagne-related activities. Although the Abbaye d’Hautvillers is not open to the public, you can visit the church of Saint Sindulphe and Dom Pérignon’s tombstone.

Here you can admire typical Champagne architecture and narrow streets where 140 wrought-iron signs illustrating the trades liven up your stroll!

CHAMPAGNE LANDSCAPES

An ideal destination for exploring the authentic Champagne villages of the Marne Valley, you’ll discover breathtaking or surprising panoramas and get to know rare and secret places!

Châtillon-sur-Marne

Once a fortified village, it still retains its narrow streets. Part of the former bailiwick court now serves as the town hall, accessed via a magnificent staircase with white stone balustrades in the Louis XIII style.

A visit to the colossal statue of Pope Urban II, which stands 33 meters tall and watches over the Champagne vineyards, is a must… The interior of the statue is only open to visitors on an exceptional basis (90 steps lead up to the level of the aisles).

Of Pope Urbain II, Eudes de Châtillons in “civil” life, we recall that he preached the first crusade to Jerusalem in 1095 and imposed the two-weekly “truce of God” in armed combat, the slightest breach of which led to excommunication.

The site also boasts an orientation table, allowing you to take in the whole valley and identify the 22 surrounding villages in the Paysages de la Champagne.

Dormans

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet

Marshal Foch chose Dormans as the symmetrical point of the two battles of the Marne, and in 1920 he had one of the four national monuments of the 1914-1918 war erected in the park of the Château.

This exceptional architectural ensemble sums up the scale of human sacrifice during the Great War. The path leads through the crypt, the upper chapel, the cloister, the lantern of the dead and the ossuary.

Access around the château leads to a 25-hectare wooded park with a conservatory orchard and a museum dedicated to Champagne tools, including a water mill with one of France’s largest bucket wheels (8 m).

La belle époque

Oeuilly, a village “out of time”, is bathed in a special atmosphere… Set in 1900 time, the village’s ecomuseums enable visitors to discover the daily life of its inhabitants in three themed areas:

Old vineyard and wine-making tools, cooperage and bombs gathered around a vintage 1850 still can be discovered in a small drop museum.
An old-fashioned classroom brings back memories: the mingled smell of wax and ink, blackboard, smock, dunce cap and wooden desks: nothing is missing!
La Maison champenoise, with its patinated furniture, alcove bed, bread oven and old-fashioned crockery, is a reminder that a family of winegrowers lived here at the end of the 19th century.

From time to time, the ecomuseum offers a “Dictée du Certificat d’Etudes” (School Certificate Dictation)… with a pen: good humor and laughter guaranteed!
