Coteaux, Maisons et Caves de Champagne World Heritage Site

The Coteaux, Maisons et Caves de Champagne are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in the “cultural landscapes” category.

The three sites that make up the registered property embody the Champagne terroir, combining the functions of living environment, working environment and showcase for traditional know-how. They are the birthplace of the benchmark sparkling wine-making method. A product of excellence, Champagne is recognized as the universal symbol of celebration, reconciliation and festivity.

The 3 sets

The wine-growing hillsides of the Marne Valley between Hautvillers and Mareuil-sur Aÿ, where the essors (cellar ventilation chimneys), the loges (tiny houses used as shelters by winegrowers)… the engraved markers indicating the boundaries between plots can be seen in the heart of the vines.
The 370 chalk pits and 25 kilometers of cellars under the Saint-Nicaise hill in Reims, former chalk extraction shafts where tens of millions of bottles are matured at the right temperature…
TheAvenue de Champagne in Epernay (under which lie 110 kilometers of cellars). This centuries-old thoroughfare is lined with some of the finest mansions (châteaux) in Champagne, built by wine merchants in the 19th century.
