Sézanne, little city of character
Located less than 2 hours from Paris and surrounded by landscapes alternating between vineyards and orchards, Sézanne is the western gateway to Champagne and the entire Grand Est region.
Numerous public buildings and private homes, including the Hôtel de Ville, the Ancien Collège, the Prétoire and the Femme Sans Tête, most of which are grouped around the imposing Gothic church of Saint-Denis, display the warm, well-kept appearance that gives Sézanne its charm and identity. The town also boasts a host of original buildings, from timber-framed mansions to proud 18th- and 19th-century houses, a Baltard-style market hall, a Récollet convent in the hospital grounds, a wooden washhouse, and many other marvels, including painted sundials, wells, statuettes in unexpected niches, bas-reliefs on pediments, etc.
At first glance, the heart of the old town has a very mineral appearance, with its old architectural buildings and cobbled streets, fountains and stone wells, but it is also punctuated by green touches with its gardens and beautiful tree-lined promenades known as “mails” – former medieval ramparts filled in during the 18th century – and planted with double or quadruple rows of lime trees. History has left its mark on the city over the centuries.
