Originating in New York, the “greeter” concept is now being exported to the Marne, with volunteer residents who arepassionate about their department.
Greeters in Champagne are not professional guides, but welcome visitors as friends, for the time of a walk to discover their town or village “off the beaten track”.
To preserve the authenticity of these encounters based on sharing and exchange, they welcome small groups of no more than six people. In this way, each walk is unique: it depends on the personality of the visitors, the greeter who accompanies them, and the affinities that develop between them…

They’d like to help tourists discover the area, sharing their favorite places, their favorites and their anecdotes during free, friendly get-togethers.
With a view to promoting and enhancing the department, the Agence de Développement Touristique and the Marne Tourist Offices have set up this network of greeters: the idea being that local residents are the best possible ambassadors to present the places in which they live on a daily basis!
All Greeter networks and the Greeters themselves share the same fundamental values:
- Greeters are volunteers, a friendly face for the visitor(s).
- Greeters welcome individuals and groups of up to 6 people.
- Meeting a Greeter is free of charge
- Greeters welcome visitors and volunteers alike, without discrimination.
- Greeter networks are part of a sustainable tourism approach that respects the environment and people. They contribute to the cultural and economic enrichment of local communities and to the positive image of the destination.
- Greeter networks promote mutual enrichment and cultural exchange between individuals for a better world.
