Formerly known as Ch\u00e2teau-sur-Aisne, the town owes its name to Manehildis, who distinguished herself by her kindness and piety in the 5th century.   <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/tourisme-en-champagne.com\/assets\/uploads\/2025\/07\/statue-reconnaissance-de-protection-pendant-la-1gmcot-sainte-menehould-collcdt-marne-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13469\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Postmaster Jean-Baptiste Drouet was instrumental in the arrest of Louis XVI in June 1791. Nearby, the historic site of the Battle of Valmy on September 20, 1792 and the Argonne sites that witnessed the First World War are not to be missed. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/tourisme-en-champagne.com\/assets\/uploads\/2025\/07\/hotel-de-ville-sainte-menehouldcot-sainte-menehould-collcdt-marne-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13474\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group col-content has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dom P\u00e9rignon was born here in 1639.
